Tallulah, Louisiana, is where my life began. I was born into an amazing family. I would like to thank my mother, the little lady, for letting me live with my grandparents. My grandfather was a Southern Baptist Minster. We went to church every Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. We were always the first family there, I asked papa, “How come we are always the first ones here and why do we stay so long?” Papa’s famous words were, “Fifteen minutes early is on time” and I replied, “If we leave fifteen minutes early we are still on time.” My grandfather said, “Pull yourself together, and helps your grandmother set up the water cooler.” I loved going to church after I decided to make it interesting. Our church took up several offerings within 30 minutes, offerings for the poor, offerings for the church fund, yard maintenance and my favorite one the calendar offering. I could not wait for my birthday month to collect my butter cookies money. I remember it like it happened yesterday, Mother Rachel said, “We need two people that were in this month to go up front and collect the calendar offerings.” We collected $41.25 my eyes lit up, butter cookies.

The Deacon and I took the money to Mother Rachel to split for us. Upon giving her the offerings, she told us, “The money we collected was going to the poor and sick, I fell to my knees and said, “Lord, why have thou forsaken me from my butter cookies?” Mother Rachel pulled me up by my arm and told me to go sit my behind on that bench. I said, “Not until I get my money.” My Grandmother who was an usher came over and said, “Gal stop showing out and come on here that money is for the sick.” I said, “I am sick I can’t move” My grandmother gave me the death look; it is amazing how quickly I got up and went sat down
